Enisala, Razim, and Iacobdeal: landscapes for photographs
A medieval fortress above Lake Razim and a lake in a former granite quarry: two photogenic directions in Tulcea County.
Updated · September 23, 2026
If you want landscapes that differ from the Delta, Tulcea County has two very photogenic directions, on opposite sides of Isaccea. To the south-east, on the road to Babadag, are Enisala Fortress and Lake Razim; to the south-west, in the Macin Mountains area near Turcoaia, is Lake Iacobdeal.
Enisala Fortress was built in the second half of the 14th century on a limestone hill above Lakes Razim and Babadag, and it is worth visiting slowly. It is run by ICEM Tulcea; check the opening hours and ticket prices on the museum's website before leaving.
Lake Iacobdeal formed in a former granite quarry on Iacobdeal hill and is worth a detour from the main road. It fits well into a day in the Macin Mountains or in Niculitel.
Both directions are easier by car than by public transport. Enisala and Iacobdeal on the same day means a lot of driving, so they are more enjoyable on separate days. For an easier trip, ask reception for current suggestions and paid transport.
