Noviodunum is one of the most natural stops if you stay in Isaccea and want to understand the place, not just pass through it. The archaeological site lies about 2 km from the town, on the bank of the Danube, near an old river crossing.
In Roman times, Noviodunum was the main base of the Roman fleet on the Lower Danube, the Classis Flavia Moesica. The settlement continued through the Byzantine and medieval periods and was abandoned after the Ottoman conquest in the early 15th century.
Do not expect a classic museum: this is an archaeological site, and the charm is in the landscape, the traces of the fortress, and the Danube beside it. The light is softer and the temperature easier in the morning or near sunset. For adults, it is a good introduction to Dobrogea's history before trips toward Tulcea, Niculitel, or Enisala; in Niculitel, the crypt of the early Christian basilica keeps the names of martyrs killed at Noviodunum.
Check access and road conditions before leaving, especially after rain. If you want to pair the walk with a meal or other nearby stops, ask reception.
